angles
Canted (Dutch angle):
This shot includes the camera to place at an angle towards the subject, if it is a specific shot like the ditch angle then the camera is at exactly at 45* causing a visual disruption.
straight on:
This camera set up has the camera placed level directly Infront of a subject with said subject in the Centre of the frame drawing the eyeline of the audience to look at the focus point.
birds eye view:
A camera placed from directly above the scene is considered a bird's eye view angle. This can be frequently used for establishing shots or to include all of a set in one frame
low angle:
When taking a photo with the camera pointed partly upward at a subject is called a low angles shot, mostly used to demonstrate and assert dominance or power to show the importance in a subject of interest.
worms eye view:
This angle has the camera places on the ground looking at a strongly tilted angle upwards at a subject of the camera
Angle | Pros | Cons |
Canted (Dutch angle): | This create an uneasy feeling and adds tension which can be very useful and add a lot behind a simple image. | This style could cause a disorientation and confusion onto an audience member if they don’t know why its tilted. |
straight on: | These photos are not confusing as they are a simple design allowing for focus to be on another detail within the frame. | This is a very common shit type which can lead to a boring image that doesn’t catch the attention of people because there isn’t a new or interesting element to the photo. |
birds eye view: | This shot gives freedom to be used from the sky and show the entire earth or be a simple medium shot. | This also has the ability to give the impression that a subject a diminished authority. |
low angle: | Mostly used to quickly imply that a subject holds power or is authoritative. | A low angle can distort facial features and be difficult to fix in postproduction. |
worms eye view: | Instantly creating the impression that the viewer is venerable even the subject doesn’t seem intimidating. | As the image is directly upwards it is easy to have a light blinding the camera ending in an over exposure but equally can mean that subjects block lighting and not light has the change to |
The next photo I took have three girls together hugging in the middle of the frame. To take this, I knelt on the ground and tilted the camera upward towards their faces. The photo makes it seem like they have an idolized friendship as they are above the viewer’s and they are in focus while the trees and location are less relevant.
the girl in the image is laying down on the ground with her whole body visible. To take this photo I had some help with someone else on my shoulders taking the photo from directly above. The grass is not blurred but is not fully in focus as it isn’t supposed to draw attention, however the girls colouful outfit makes her stand out and she is in focus.
The last photo has three girls looking directly down at the cameras from above. This image required for me to lie down on the ground while the girls stood on a bench to appear further away. As the sun was setting and the girls were directly above the camera there wasn’t a lot of light that was able to enter the lens even with a low shutter speed and high exposure levels so the image is darker than most but still puts the girls in a position of power over the audience.
