natural lighting

Natural lighting is the most frequently used lighting source for images as lots of moments are captured outside where the sun is the main source of light, if not the only source of light. This can become an advantage as well as a disadvantage

Lighting

Pros

Cons

Sunny

Fully lit photograph, allowing the shutter to be high and aperture to be low while still seeing a lot of light in the product

Only one source and can blind the camera, overexposing the image

Shadows

Adds depth, dimension, and a dramatic effect as well as strengthening an images narrative

If a light is too strong or too weak the shadows may not be clear

Silhouette

A silhouette can convey a lot through semiotics and through the simple use of shapes and outlines

Can be hard to capture correctly with the figure clearly outlined

Taken on a mobile phone, this image shows a teen girl sitting on a bench looking out with nobody else around. This peaceful image was taken from a distance with the lighting toned down and partly zoomed in. Noticeably the clouds were a bit grey, with a muddy ground and dark brown trees, this led to the decision of the adaptation of the lighting settings on the phone in order for the grass to pop more and the girl to stand out as colour from the bland palette behind her and surrounding her. Because this was taken on a phone there was no need to adjust the focus as that was automatically set correctly this speed up the process of taking the photo and meant that I didn't miss the moment where she was looking up at the trees, this aspect of the photo connotes to the audience that it is a natural candid image and adds to the peacefulness of the surroundings.

This photo has the setting of a public park with around 15 teenagers visible in frame, the teenagers seem to be having fun with a range of variety of enjoying a swing roundabout in a park. When taking this image I realised that the sun was very brightly shining and that there were a lot of strong shadows because of this on the ground. However in an attempt to quickly taken photo before people were off the swing set I didn't have long enough to adapt the settings on the DSLR camera to reduce the level of light entering the camera, therefore the result of the photo is quite a bright image however that can be adapted in post production editing or left as is to show the intensity of the sunny day. When taking the images stood at a distance briefly zoomed into a centre point and focused the camera before making sure that everybody was in frame on the playpark mobile and then took the photo this meant that although the photo may be seen as low quality or not perfect timing the image came out well as the moment didn't last long so the candid result is satisfactory. And the audience can clearly see that the teenagers are enjoying their time and therefore also may feel a sense of joy or ad venture, or similarly a want to do something that leads to an adrenaline rush in the sun or an activity of similar style, intriguing the audience further.

The third photo has a girl in autumn standing next to a tree, the girl is wearing an oversized fluffy grey jumper with joggers, the audience can see the green grass with buildings in the background and the colourful leaves on the tree and on the ground that have just fallen allowing them to denote that it is the autumn time. When taking this photo I crouched to the ground and slightly tilted the DSLR camera, this gives the photo a more natural candid look as well as making the girl appear more cosy and comfortable and warm, which is what many audience will feel and connote with that season. When taking the image i zoomed in on the tree as there is more detail on the tree than the girl has and then readjusted the aperture 2 have the full scenery in frame deciding to cut off the top of the tree so that the girl didn't look small as that would bring the attention to the tree rather than the subject of the photo.
