A studio lighting set up is inside with cameras and specific lighting created perfectly for the exact vison the photographer has in mind. The conditions in a studio are all controlled meaning there is no wind or shadows if that’s not desired.
Pros | Cons |
All effects are controlled (wind, movement etc) | Need to hire more people to do more jobs |
No limitation to hours of day light, or weather conditions. | No creative backgrounds or setting- has to be added in post production. |
Can have multiple lights including adaptable colours and brightness. | Artists can’t gain inspiration from around the location, all details have to be thought of previously. |

This girl is seen in the centre of the camera looking to the audience is right, her hair is down and frames her face while she is visibly sat cross legged rotated to the side, in front of the camera. When taking this we liked the idea of a portrait with a girl comfortable combined with the idea of a candid photo however to maintain and eat final product we still used a DSLR camera on a preset tripod with studio lighting in a studio. We used coloured lighting to try and match the elements of the girls jumper and because of this her eyes also seemed to match as they are blue but have the reflection of pink light in them. Due to the access of a studio we were able to have a zoomed out image without any disrupting background assets, we were also able to choose a backdrop that wouldn't reflect or take away from the focus point of the photo. All of these elements added to the final product helping create a very cohesive portrait.
When using a studio we initially set up the cameras and lighting around the room angled the lights towards where a subject would be placed preset a tripod and DSLR camera as well as turning off main lights or other possible lights in the room. We then tried a multitude of poses and settings on the camera and lights, eventually setting on a warm purple lighting as it matched the subjects shut. Eventually we liked the idea of a candid photo where the girl is looking down and her hair is not perfect therefore the audience seems as though it wasn't as planned or as perfectly placed.
His first image has a girl with a mask over her face looking directly into the centre of the lens she's wearing purple with a background drop of a subtle purple or pink colour and is holding the mask over her eyes although to conceal the rest of her face. When designing the outcome of this image we used coloured plastic sheets of purple and pink over a studio light in order to create the colour visible in the background reflecting off a white back screen. Even though we had access to a purple backdrop we felt that it was overpowering and too strong of A use with one colour, therefore we decided to go with subtle lighting to match the girls T-shirt rather than a full backdrop that may have taken away from the main focus point of the photo. Replace the DSLR camera onto a tripod and requested that the subject sits on a table preset to be the height of where the camera was stationed. When taking the image the studio lights were turned off as well as other lights around the room, this was in order to have all the focus on the model and get the ideal outcome.
